This position is based in either Rockhampton or Townsville and will require travel by road/air in central Queensland

Purpose of the position

Woongal Environmental services (Woongal) is seeking an enthusiastic, self-motivated field ecologist to undertake the implementation of a major mining industry related biodiversity and offset area management project

Woongal works in an exciting cross-Cultural context, enabling First Nations people to be engaged in the environmental management of their traditional lands. Woongal is a supply nation registered and Wangan and Jagalingou certified indigenous business, delivering environmental monitoring and land management services to industries in central Queensland. About the Role

The role invovles flora and fauna assessments and monitoring in accordance with State and Commonwealth guidelines, data management, report prepartion, proposal development and project management.

As part of this role there will be opportunities to develop field ecology and environmental management expertise and broaden project management experience. The role invovles learning from and working with expert environmental scientists.

The role invovles the training and mentoring of First Nations Rangers and other staff in practical field ecology, practical land management and formal studies in environmental management.

Key Duties and Accountabilities

A suitable candidate for this role will be accountable for:

  • Implementation of biodiversity monitoring programs in accordance with statutory management plans
  • Field observations and data recording using spatial and electronic technologies
  • Reviewing and adjusting monitoring programs to achieve the requiered outcomes
  • Reporting against management plan and contract deliverables
  • Supervison and mentoring of a team of First Nations Rangers
  • Contributing to the development and management of landscape scale environmental management programs
  • Onsite management of safety obligation and safe work protocols
  • Onsite management of assets and staff including vehicles and organisational data bases


  • Tertiary qualifications in zoology, botany, ecology , or environmental science are required
  • Must be the holder of an unrestricted manual class 'C' or higher class of driver's licence- certification for driving and recovering 4WD vehicles would be beneficial
  • Must be the holder of a Standard 11 Mine Safety Induction (surface) Certificate and Mining Supervisor (G1, G8, G9) and Carry out the Risk Assessment process (G2) Certificates or capable and willing to obtain such certificates- additional certification in ACMCAN307- Rehabilitate native wildlife and HLTAID006- Provide advanced first aid or HLTAID003- Provide first aid would be beneficial

Skills and Experience

  • Two (2) or more years' experience in field ecology with an emphasis on ecological monitoring and biodiversity condition assessment
  • Working knowledge of Queensland and Commonwealth environmental legislation
  • Working knowledge of the Queensland regional ecosystems framework
  • Demonstrated experience in planning, coordination, and undertaking ecological fieldwork
  • Demostrated ability to identify Queensland plant and animal species, record wildlife behaviour and habitat characteristics and handle and manage wildlife
  • Demonstrated experince and skill in the use of GIS based technologies in field ecology
  • Well-developed analytical, written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated experience in coordinating and working with other people to achieving desired outcomes
  • Demonstrated commitments to and understanding of Health, Safety, Environment and Quality systems and safe work methods
  • Demostrated ability and physical fitness to undertake fieldwork invovling walking, carrying and manual labour
  • Demonstrated willingness and capability to train and mentor First Nations Rangers and other staff in practical field ecology and formal studies

Key Capabilities

  • The performance of this role invovles a seven (7) days on and seven (7) days off roster with accommodation provided in a mining camp
  • Some of of hours and night work involving environmental monitoring and fire management will be required with this role
  • Intrastate travel involving road/airline travel and overnight absences from home will be required in this role
  • Participation in wild-fire management and the handling of wildlife are required in this role
  • It is a standard requirement for employment with Woongal, that a successful candidate
  • be an Australian citizen/permanent resident or be the holder of a visa that allows permanent full-time work in Australia at the time of making an application
  • Undertake a pre-employment medical review
