The Role
We are seeking a temporary full-time Fisheries Technician to join the Fishery Monitoring Team. This position supports the delivery of scientific data that underpins stock assessments and fisheries management in Queensland.
The contract is until September 2026, with the possibility of extension. The role will involve a range of technical duties, including the measurement and processing of commercial and recreationally caught fish samples, the preparation and processing of otoliths, and the age estimation process to provide data for stock assessments and fishery management.
Key Responsibilities
- Collect samples and data from Queensland’s fisheries, following documented protocols.
- Process fish samples in the field and laboratory (length, sex, otoliths, tissue for genetics).
- Prepare and section otoliths, mount them for analysis, and assist with age estimation.
- Accurately record and report sampling data.
- Apply high levels of scientific accuracy during sample and data collection, while maintaining integrity and respecting commercial, recreational, charter and indigenous sensitivities.
- Communicate effectively with team members, stakeholders, and supervisors.
- Assist other groups with priority projects when required.
- Maintain equipment and laboratories in a clean, safe, and functional state.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
- Strong attention to detail, with the ability to follow procedures precisely.
- Capacity to provide accurate reports following field sampling trips.
- Associate Diploma in Science, Applied Science, or Rural Science (or equivalent qualification).
- Current Queensland ‘C’ Class driver’s licence.
- Willingness to travel for up to one week at a time.
- Previous experience in fisheries survey work (field and/or laboratory).
- Knowledge of Queensland’s commercial and recreational fisheries.
- Ability to identify both target and non-target species.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365 (Outlook, Teams, Excel, SharePoint).
- Current First Aid certification.
- Elements of Shipboard Safety training.
