The role
We are seeking an experienced Principal Mining Engineer for a 12 month contract to support open‑cut coal operations. This role requires a highly capable, hands‑on engineer who can operate across multiple planning horizons and technical disciplines.

Based on-site at Dawson Mine, This is a technically focused position suited to a senior mining professional with strong capability across dragline and truck‑and‑shovel mining. You will work across short, medium and long-term planning functions and support operational teams with high‑quality engineering inputs.

There are no direct reports, but the role requires strong engagement with production, geotechnical, drill & blast and planning teams.
  
Key Responsibilities
  • Short and medium-term mine planning and scheduling
  • Pit design, reserving and mine layout development
  • Dragline strip planning and modelling
  • Truck & shovel / excavator planning and design
  • Drill & blast planning and blast optimisation
  • Haulage and production scheduling
  • Delivering engineering support across Mining Engineer to Senior/Superintendent level scope
  • Working on-site as part of a multi‑disciplinary team
  
Skills & Experience
To be considered, you will ideally have:
  • Open‑cut coal mining experience
  • Experience in both dragline strip mining and truck & shovel terrace mining
  • Strong multi‑discipline technical capability across:
    • Pit Design & Reserving – Deswik CAD
    • Draglines – Deswik DD, 3ddig
    • Truck & Shovel / Excavator – Deswik CADTech
    • Drill & Blast – Deswik DB, Blast Logic
    • Scheduling – Spry (including haulage)
  • Ability to operate across multiple levels of responsibility 
  • Strong problem‑solving skills and the ability to work effectively with operations
  • Willingness to work on-site
Roster & Conditions
  • FIFO / DIDO / 9‑day fortnight options available
  • Monday to Friday roster preferred, open to discussion
  • Camp accommodation provided
  • Approx. 45–50 hours per week
