Make a real impact protecting Australia's environment

AWX is partnering with a government environmental program to recruit Field Surveillance Officers to support long-term eradication efforts targeting harmful invasive species. These roles offer stable, year-round work, meaningful conservation outcomes, and the opportunity to work in some of Far North Queensland's most unique landscapes.

If you're physically fit, enjoy working outdoors, and want to contribute to protecting Australia's natural ecosystems, this could be the role for you.

About the Role
You will work as part of a dedicated field team conducting surveillance, mapping, treatment, and eradication activities in rainforest and remote environments.

Key responsibilities include:
  • Conducting field surveillance and treatment in rainforest terrain
  • Safely using tools such as machetes, spray units, chainsaws, and GPS equipment
  • Walking long distances daily (up to ~15 km), including steep and challenging terrain
  • Carrying equipment, food, and water for full-day field operations
  • Collecting GPS data, samples, and project records
  • Supporting team-based field operations, including safety and emergency responses
  • Communicating with landholders, stakeholders, and program staff
  • Working safely in tropical conditions and around wildlife and hazardous flora
Work Conditions
  • Monday to Friday, early starts from 6am
  • Hours may vary depending on weather conditions
  • Wet-season work required
  • Roles available year-round until 2028-2029, with potential extension
**Recent applicants within the last 6 months are not required to re-apply**

About You
You're practical, resilient, safety-focused, and comfortable working in demanding outdoor environments.

You must have:
  • Experience in intensive outdoor or field-based work (bushland, rainforest, labouring or similar)
  • Strong physical endurance and ability to work in harsh weather and terrain
  • A strong commitment to Workplace Health & Safety (WHS)
  • A current open manual QLD C-Class licence and reliable transport
  • Ability to pass Drug & Alcohol testing and a Physical Functional Assessment
  • Ability to obtain and pass a National Police Check
  • Australian citizenship or permanent residency (proof required)
