Are you an experienced strategic land use planner ready to make a meaningful impact in a growing coastal region? We are seeking multiple Senior Strategic Planners to join our Strategy & Sustainability team in beautiful Hervey Bay. As a Senior Strategic Planner, you will support the Manager Strategic Land Use Planning to develop, implement, and continually improve regional land use planning strategies across the Fraser Coast.
You will lead strategic planning projects, provide expert land use advice, manage complex datasets, develop policy solutions, and support community engagement initiatives. This senior role also contributes to mentoring emerging planners and representing Council in stakeholder forums.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead strategic land use planning projects and policy development
- Interpret and apply relevant town planning legislation and frameworks
- Manage and report on complex planning information and data
- Prepare Council reports, planning policies, consultation documents, and presentations
- Coordinate community engagement and consultation activities
- Provide expert advice on development applications and pre‑lodgement enquiries
- Manage external consultants and deliver project milestones
- Support continuous improvement in planning practices
- Mentor junior staff and assist in team leadership responsibilities
- Advanced skills in developing land use planning policies, strategies and procedures
- Strong project management capability with proven delivery outcomes
- Comprehensive knowledge of planning legislation and frameworks
- Demonstrated leadership capability
- Excellent written, verbal, negotiation and stakeholder engagement skills
- Degree in Town Planning (AQF Level 7+) or equivalent recognised by the Planning Institute of Australia
- Extensive experience in strategic land use planning or development assessment
- Current QLD Class C Driver Licence
- Knowledge of Queensland planning legislation
- PIA membership (or eligibility)
- GIS experience
