About The Role:
Working within Biosecurity Queensland, the successful candidate will be part of a The Tick Fever Centre (TFC), which undertakes vaccine development, production and distribution to support Queensland's livestock industries through the provision of a safe, effective and affordable tool for the reliable long-term control of tick fever in cattle.
As part of this opportunity, the successful candidate will be required to perform the following:
• Undertake practical animal related activities within the farm and quarantine shed.
• Undertake animal care tasks for cattle (calves through to adults) such as cleaning and sanitation of animal enclosures, feeding, and exercising animals.
• Provide practical knowledge and skills in animal husbandry using low stress stock handling techniques to muster and move cattle, draft and process cattle through yards, assist in blood sampling procedures and where appropriate under supervision of a veterinarian administration veterinary prescribed medical treatments.
• Assist with biosecurity practices to ensure the disease-free status of the vaccine manufacture herd is maintained, disposal of culls and re-location of animals for vaccine production, in accordance with TFC, animal health, animal welfare, and livestock financial management requirements.
• Provide timely, clear, and accurate information to supervisor and where appropriate other parties with regards to animal welfare issues.
• Provide aid to sick/unwell animals when required. Where appropriate provide basic first aid and calling supervisor and veterinary assistance.
• Assist with delivery of operational plans for land preparation for pasture improvement, animal nutrition, with a high focus on animal welfare.
• Undertake property maintenance including water and fencing infrastructure, bores, pumps, solar equipment, fencing, electric fencing and cattle yard maintenance and cleaning.
• Operate machinery and equipment, including tractors, side by sides, and four-wheel drive Utes, applying chemical for weed control, safely within the guidelines of SOP's. Conduct servicing, cleaning, and calibration of plant and equipment including chemical, fertilizer and tillage equipment.
• Work independently and with other staff, following instructions from Farm Supervisor to successfully complete tasks.
• Perform tasks in accordance with relevant standard operating procedures (SOPs), protocols or methodologies to support ongoing compliance with relevant quality standards (quality management system), laboratory accreditations (Australian Code of Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), workplace health and safety (WHS) requirements and legislative obligations.
• Demonstrate initiative and responsibility by completing allocated tasks and activities to a high standard.
• Communicates openly and effectively with supervisor, colleagues, and other staff both orally and written. Possess good computer skills to maintain accurate animal records to standards required by Quality Assurance guidelines of the Tick Fever Centre.
• Complies with Workplace Health and Safety requirements and reports any unsafe practices, procedures, and equipment to Supervisor.
• Maintain an appropriate level of physical fitness and dexterity and promptly notify your manager of any injury, illness, or loss of capacity to undertake standard physical tasks safely and efficiently.
What you will bring:
Mandatory requirements
• A current C class driver's licence.
• Commitment to obtain QFever vaccination or evidence of prior vaccination will be required prior to starting with Biosecurity Queensland.
• Experience in handling large animals.
• Participation in an out-of-hours roster will be required. e.g. 4 hours Saturday & 4 hours Sunday.
• Will need to assist with some activities at the Dalby site when staff on leave.
• You will be required to maintain an appropriate level of fitness and dexterity and promptly notify your manager of any injury, illness or loss of capacity to undertake standard physical tasks safely and efficiently.
• Be prepared to work with and handle chemicals, if required.
This role is working 8.5 hour days on a 9 day fortnight and contract until June 2026 with possible extension for the right candidate.
