From Trauma to Triumph: a mental health journey

    Emma Thean • Aug 24, 2023

AWX Sydney Business Development manager, Dave Oliver is a prominent advocate for mental health, and emphasises the importance of owning one's journey and improving support in the workplace. We sat down with Dave earlier in the year to get his take on mental health in the work place. He draws from personal experiences and professional endeavours to highlight the significance of creating a conducive environment for mental well-being.

Navigating Challenges: Cultivating a Supportive Work Environment

Dave reflects on his work in supportive environments and emphasises, "It's not just about what we do, but who we are and the people we associate ourselves with."

His own journey toward mental well-being, shaped by significant childhood trauma, allows him to deeply resonate with the pursuit of a healthier mental state. Dave shares, "Being a Lifeline volunteer for three years has provided me with a clearer understanding of supporting people in crisis.” He is also the face of SAMSN for the 2023 Men’s Health Week campaign, “Doing It Tough?

Recognising the challenges faced by individuals in crisis, Dave highlights the importance of both reactive and proactive support. He believes that fostering empathy and creating a work environment where difficult times are minimised can greatly benefit individuals.

A concern raised by Dave is the struggle faced by individuals who cannot bring their whole selves to the workplace. He states, "Not being able to bring your complete self to an area as important as the workplace can be incredibly challenging." Dave advocates for organisations to provide a safe space that supports and guides individuals in navigating their reality.

Dave expresses concern about awareness fatigue surrounding mental health, suggesting that many people may not embark on their healing journey or take proactive steps due to a lack of awareness or understanding.

Embracing Authenticity: A Path to Personal Fulfillment

In Dave’s view, empowering individuals to own their own journey is crucial. He encourages people to bring more of their authentic selves to the workplace, as this leads to personal fulfilment and improved engagement. He says, "Why not bring more of yourself to the space we share? It may manifest in more productivity and better connections with colleagues."

Dave stresses the importance of accessible resources and support systems that enable individuals to navigate their reality safely. By fostering personal growth and empathy in the workplace, organisations can contribute to reducing the frequency of challenging times and promoting overall productivity and engagement.

Dave Oliver's authentic approach to men's health serves as a reminder of the collective responsibility to create supportive environments where individuals can thrive mentally and emotionally. His insights inspire us to take ownership of our well-being and work towards fostering authentic connections and support systems within and outside the workplace.

Unlocking Success: A glimpse into AWX recruiter Johan's journey
By Emma Thean 07 Dec, 2023
Discovering labour hire in Australia Sunshine Coast Account Manager, Zac Holmes’ journey began when he arrived in Australia in 2021, still working remotely for his UK-based employer. However, he soon faced the reality of job hunting in a new country. "I found it very difficult to find a job in Australia. I applied for well over a hundred places and didn't really get any contact back at all. I had a couple of interviews that didn't really get me too far," he said. But fate had a different plan. A leap into the unknown "Honestly, I didn't know what to expect from the recruitment industry. It was not something I had ever really thought about in the UK, and labour hire was not something I'd heard about either," Zac said. Yet, he embraced the challenge and joined AWX, initially in a recruitment role. From recruitment to account management Zac quickly adapted to his role, realising its significance. "I knew how important the job was going to be when I took it on, making sure that we were supplying clients with candidates that are good (and reliable!)," he said. Within six months, he transitioned into account management, cultivating strong relationships with businesses. "I started off with just the wall and built up quite a good reputation and a good relationship with the client," he reflected, paving the way for his current role as an account manager. Passion for empowering others Zac’s motivation stems from in witnessing others succeed. "The main thing is helping people. Helping people get roles in a site or location that they like and enjoy, and then the opportunities that can give them as well," he shared. He also draws motivation from self-improvement, proving to himself that he can excel beyond his perceived limits. Words of wisdom For those starting their careers, Zac's advice is clear: "Be ready to learn and be ready to ask questions. Be ready to get on the front foot and really learn the tricks of the trade." For candidates, accountability is key. "Be accountable for your work and your actions," he said. Nurturing success stories Zac also finds fulfilment in candidates' growth. "Candidates that have been taken on full time by the client always put a smile on my face," he said. He values individuals who aspire to better themselves and seize new opportunities. Zac’s journey at AWX is a testament to adaptability, dedication, and the impact of personal connections in the world of recruitment.

Empowering traditional knowledge Last year, the Department of Environment and Science extended an invitation to AWX Executive and Partners On Country to assemble an independent expert panel. This panel was tasked with offering counsel to the government regarding the future safeguarding of the Great Barrier Reef, its marine life, and the surrounding waters. During the selection process, we had the pleasure of identifying Malachi Johnson, a proud Gooreng Gooreng man and esteemed former sea ranger, as an ideal candidate for the role of TUMRA Project Manager ( Traditional Use of Marine Resources Agreements ).

Have you been contacted by a recruiter offering you a job unexpectedly? A scam is circulating where scammers are contacting people posing as an AWX recruiter via phone call, WhatsApp and SMS. They try to trick people into handing over personal details or financial information. We’ve put together some information to help you recognise if a call or message is genuine or a scam. How can I tell if a message is a scam? Scammers can be sophisticated, however, there are a number of indicators that a message or call may be a scam, including: The offer is too good to be genuine. The call is from a number you don’t recognise or a blocked number. Sometimes the quality of the call will be poor or there may be a delay in their response. They ask you for personal information such as bank details or your driver’s licence number. The message contains typos or spelling errors, a link with strange combination of letters or an unknown sender name or number. Using tactics to try to convince you to make a decision quickly while under pressure. Please be assured, AWX’s will not request secure information over the phone or message. Our process is for all information to be uploaded via the AWX portal.
